Leave it to me to be in a tunnel, crypt, war bunker and nun wine cellar whilst on vacation😂🙈😊 During Greek rule, these tunnels started off being mined for their special rocks formed by the volcanic eruptions. They were perfect for moulding and building houses.
There was then a need to have running water in these houses so the slaves were then instructed to burrow 17km into the next town to tap into their water system as Maples doesn’t have a direct fresh water body of its own. The Romans then stepped in, took over and burrowed what is now 170km of a filtered water system through Naples.
Soon after the success of the underwater system, world war 2 erupted. These tunnels were now perfect for housing up to 2000 refugees. Trust me when I say, you can still smell the ‘toilets’ in certain areas…😷 As you venture further and deeper into the tunnels, you end up 35m deep beneath a church whereby a very stylish wine cellar + food storage is situated. The church is said to have been a nunnery. I suppose wine aids in bringing one closer to holiness…😉👀 250years later, the brilliance of this place still stands virtually unaltered, portraying the great intellect our forefathers possessed that still baffles science today.
It’s been a great nerdy day… 😊
